The tale of young Emmett Buell Jaxon captivated the world. With his striking blue eyes, few would guess that he was born missing part of his brain and skull, defying the odds to survive. Despite the initial doubts from doctors upon learning of his condition, the baby from Florida, United States, surpassed all expectations, celebrating his first birthday and attempting his first steps.
The young boy’s parents, Brandon and Brittany Buell, revealed that he suffers from severe brain malformation. According to data published on the Daily Mail website, one in 4,859 babies in the USA are born with anencephaly, and they typically pass away shortly after birth.
The mother recalls the moment she was pregnant and received news of her son’s health issue.
“At the 17th-week ultrasound, when we found out the gender, everything seemed fine. However, the following day, I received a call from a doctor informing me that there was a problem with my son.”
Brandon had to consult several specialists before obtaining the correct diagnosis for the baby.
The mother still recalls how the doctors advised her to consider abortion. At that time, she was 23 weeks pregnant.
“Who are we to decide? We’ve been blessed with the opportunity to have a child, and we owe it to him to at least give him a chance to make his voice heard. We chose to give him the opportunity to fight, and that’s exactly what he’s been doing.”
Miraculously, the baby survived and was delivered by cesarean section on August 27, 2014, weighing 1 kg. He spent weeks in an intensive care unit while several doctors attempted to comprehend the boy’s condition.
“It was incredibly emotional. I vividly recall holding him in my arms while the doctors informed me that he might never walk or even speak.”
With no cure in sight, Brandon’s coworkers established a fundraising page to assist with the care of the little one. The boy’s uplifting tale resonated with families across the US, garnering 90,000 “likes” on the page.
